when you're facing a lot of planes and they have other planes that are kind of parallel to your line of vision they vanish into a VANISHING POINT according to where you are looking from
a straight line is going to be at your eye level
in the picture of the girl by the pool, the fence was leaning in a way that it would have been below the viewer's eye level and unless you were looking at the girl from below - which was not otherwise indicated - the fence was portrayed as very, very short
